The Hotel is currently undergoing refurbishment, which was not stated when making the reservation. Although a two star rating is given for this hotel, I found the room to be very basic but reasonably clean. I would also like to know what is meant by 'hot buffet breakfast' as all that was available was croissant, juice and coffee. However, in terms of budget accommodation, I would have no hesitaion in recommending it.

Reserved a double room but got a room with three single beds. Reception did not oblige. Basically said too bad, fully booked. Two cockroaches in the bathroom, unclean. Hallway on fifth floor leading to room looked like a building site, most unappealing. Thoroughly disappointing stay!
lift not working had to walk to 6th floor for the duration of our stay. Grave health & safety risk on stair ways had to climb over obstacles as major building work was being done. Service at reception was abismal. Rooms were not very clean, we slept on the beds rather than in them. The only saving grace was the fact that the hotel was pretty central.

Nice location between city and beach at a decent price. Would have received higher marks on location with less traffic noise. Drawbacks: the room was ugly with gloomy colours and furniture and no wall decorations, the beds are a bit stiff and short.
certain rooms are quite small, such as 311

Very low class for the price of staying in this hotel. Take it off the list.
This hotel is over-rated at 2 stars. Building work is ongoing and the banging and hammering starts at 7.30 AM every morning. This is a very poor relation to other budget hotels we saw in the city. The bed covers were splattered with paint, wiring left much to be desired and, had any other accommodation been available, we would have just walked out on arrival. Doubt if we'll use website again.....
While most of the receptionist team do not speak english very well, they were quite helpful. The breakfast breads/pastries were stale, but then again, the breads in most Barcelona eateries were about the same quality and standard.

A very undesireable hotel, we are glad that we only booked it for one night.
Very basic hotel, but clean and in a very good location for seeing all the sights. Near the beach and just round the corner from the metro if you don't want to walk.

The room was extremely small. It was suitable only for a single bed. The bed was about 20years old and was in need of re-newing.
Little or no help wiht questions and problems I encountered, despite my pretty fair spanish. I have been to Europe every other year for 20 years and would not stay here again.
hotel was clean but basic and our double room was only just bigger than the bed which made moving around a bit awkward. location was good after you work out where you are in the city. breakfast was a bit to basic & the receptionist didnt really seem to understand any questions.
Roof tiles in bathroom missing(could see all pipework),not enough tea to go around to much coffee in dining room, but otherwise a very good hotel

The lift broke twice, we had to lug luggage up to the 5th floor. There were no tea or coffee making facilities, no hairdryer, one of the plugs didn't work, there were only two! the other was in the bathroom. Brekfast food was poor - very limited. Wouldn't stay there again.
Friendly, helpful staff. Not all speak English but they read mime very well. Very close to superb Barcelona sights. Very close to Estacio de Franca with a direct rail (RENFE) connection to the Airport. Breakfast a bit feeble but there are plenty of cafes and bars nearby. I'll certainly be staying there again.

Room clean but had damp, funny smell, no soap, open wiring, missing woodwork and air con had no thermostat so circulated air, not hot not cold. We put passports in the safe - no receipts, no problem but they lost them and it took half an hour to find them. The beds were old and I was woken at 6.10am by a tel call - they hung up, 2 mins later porter was banging and shouting about a taxi. The image was not now but ten years ago. I will not be using the service again.
It was a dump. I wouldnt have dared eat there.
I guess I was suprised by the fact that, for the price, there was no separate bathroom as such, just a sink, a shower & a toilet scattered in the room. The phone was purely decorative (the wire was detached from the wall) and I had to ask for a replacement TV since the one in the room was broken. The staff was friendly and the hotel served its purpose (so long as you don't intend to spend a lot of time in your room then it is fine). The walls are quite thin though and we could hear everything that went on in the nextdoor bedroom. The location however was good : it was in a quiet area, yet 5 mins from the port - about 10 mins from la Rambla. As I said, it served its purpose ..but don't expect any luxury. Still, I paid £50 per night and believe the hotel offers more expensive bedrooms that might have been better.
The hotel's location is extremely convinient (literally meters away from the Estacio de França train station), especially now (november 2007) that the free shuttle bus to the airport stops at the main gate. There is a metro station in the vicinity, and numerous bus routes too. Within walking distance is the neighborhood of 'El Born', a trendy area with medieval buildings, many boutique shops, cafes and restaurants. Also very near are the zoo and the Port Olimpic area. The hotel is very quiet, though. The hotel is decent for the price, but expect no luxuries. The TV in my room was not working, and the room itself was ver small. Breakfast was very scarce, and service very poor (at the restaurant; it was OK at the reception).

Sehr kleine Zimmer.

Very modest small hotel with a good location.
teuer, aber alles in allem ok, zumal in Barcelona anscheinend ein großer Mangel an Hotels besteht. Extrem kleines Zimmer und Einrichtung heruntergekommen.
This hotel was an average hotel with a great location. It was easy to walk to all the main attractions, but did not offer many luxuries.
Good quiet central location, however extensive renovations taking place with some exposed wiring and all the dust and noise that goes with it. I would certainly stay again, but only after the workmen have left, which may be some months away.
Clean, basic accommodation in nice location not far from Las Ramblas. Breakfast service was good and reception staff very helpful. Rooms slightly on the small side.
At the price I paid I only expected a fairly basic hotel and that's precisely what I got. The hotel room seemed a bit dingy. There was a small television, but, when I switched it on all I saw was a 'snowstorm' i.e. no visible channels. When I enquired at the reception desk, I was told the only available channel was in Spanish - so no use to me. There were 2 males who manned the reception desk. One was always very cheery and helpful. The other seemed a little more staid in his approach - and thought nothing of smoking whilst on duty behind the desk. As a non-smoker, I found this quite unpleasant, having to have a conversation with him whilst he was smoking. Location was excellent. Just a minute or two and you were in the heart of the old town.
I heard before i went down to Barcelona that many people didn´t think it was a nice hotel and the service was low. I think the hotel was more than i had expected, the personal in the lobby was very kindly and helpful. It was near the harbour and the main streets. The fee for the room and breakfast was good. Of course the rooms where quite small and the bathrooms wasn`t in the quality shape. If you just go there to sleep and want to be near attractions i must say that i recomend the hotel.
This is a very basic hotel but, clean and friendly. The staff were helpful with a bar frequented by locals, cheap restaraunts very close, a metro and mainline railway station within one minutes walk. The area is not bad,, mainly surrounded by government and commercial properties but an older quieter quarter of the city. Ideal backpacker hotel, situated on a backstreet and quiet square. 15minute walk from Rambalas, 5mins. from Picasso Museum and St Maria del Mar Church.

Will never stay there again.

Excellent hotel for a 2 star, suitable for those on a budget break. Location wise, it is great as the Metro is just round the corner, and the harbour just a ten minute walk. Staff were very friendly and helpful in all areas.
Fairly good location. The staff were spontaneously helpful when I had a problem with my luggage. A place to put your head down on a pillow.
As a base for a short stay of 3 nights this was an ideal hotel. The location was very convenient. Near to the metro station and a short walk to most of the tourist areas in Barca such as the Port Olympic, the beaches, La Rambla, Barri Gothic and many museums. The staff were very helpful with places to visit and spoke good English (and they understood my Spanish!). We Felt safe walking around - hardly any hassle from beggers. Less than in a lot of UK towns & cities. Will use this hotel again.

A nice hotel on walking distance of the Ramblas and the harbour. A simple nice hotel which is good for a short stay. For a long stay i would recommend more luxury.
bathroooms should be cleaned on a daily basis and bedroom floors should be hoovered also on a daily basis.
Very basic hotel- rooms very small but clean and comfortable. Arrived with 20 minutes to spare for breakfast one day and were only offered coffee and juice. Rarely saw a smile from staff!!
Location of the hotel is excellent and the staff is very friendly. The rooms with a double bed are very small. When I asked for a more spacious room, we got a room with a twin bed which was much nicer.
very basic accomodation. hotel is slowly being slightly modernised, but still room for improvement. rooms are small but clean and are ideal for a cheap break away. breakfast was a bit disappointing as tea and coffee usually cold served with a bread roll or croissant. Evening meals did not lok very appealing. staff very helpful.
Tiny rooms and very loud steet noise. It was alittle scary for a single female traveler.
The hotel was undergoing extensive renovation at the time of our stay. This included replastering of all the passageways and stairways. As a consequence there was a large amount of plaster dust that increased the asthma of my travelling companion. The bedroom, whilst clean was also in need of major renovation. Once this work is done, this will be a very good value basic hotel.

We had to stay two persons in a one persons bedroom. We didnt have any place to put our suitcases.
Being Canadian maybe my expectation for Hotel criteria are higher than European ?? Santa Marta in Barcelona is a 2 stars but at 82 euro I was expecting much better. 1)room space very limited+- 120 sq ft , ensuite bathroom only 40 sq. ft 2) during our 6 day stay on the 5th floor,80% was under major repair... from 8:00am to 6:00pm dust, dirt, noise etc etc 3) one elevator for 60rooms on 6 floors 4) I would not rate this Hotel at 2 stars at least not by my Canadian expectation

No-one told me the hotel Santa Marta was to be re-furbished during my stay, 11th - 14 th February 2003. The reception area, bar, dining room, were full of cement dust. Floods in the dining room, we had to eat our breakfast in the basement. Poor furnishings, broken lino, no hot water. Unreliable lift full of cables, bricks and cement. The stairs were dirty and steep, holes in the floors outside the rooms, toilets abandoned in corridors! Not the Managers fault but THE GREEDY HOTEL CHAIN!!!!

the hotel was noisy, filthy, a/C broken an noisy, smallest rooms, and the beds broken, I am telling you the mattresses were destroyed, I changed room twice, and change 4 beds withouth being able to sleep because of it, and my back is broken . you guys should take it off your list
